The Metro West Fire Protection District recently launched another new program to help in the reduction of youth injuries. The new “Metro West Bicycle Helmet” program is now available to the public. The program is modeled off of St. Louis County’s program with a few additions. Helmets are being distributed at each Metro West station at no cost to the public. The helmets are branded Metro West Yellow with our district logo on one side. The helmets will be fitted and given to any child needing one.
Each front line unit has a stock of certificates. These certificates will be issued to a child riding without, or with an improper fitting helmet. The card notes that a child should come with a parent to any station
within 5 days to obtain a free helmet and fitting. The reason for the time period is to motivate them to come and get a helmet quickly to prevent an injury. If a child comes past the 5 day time period to get their helmet we will not turn them away. If a Metro West unit is in service and notices children riding without, or with an improper helmet stop and issue them a certificate and encourage them and their parents to come and visit us at the nearest station for a properly fitting helmet.
We are excited to be able to continue to expand our injury prevention programs. Our appreciation to St. Louis County Police Department, Wildwood Precinct for their help and guidance getting our program up and running. In addition to our stations the administrative office staff are also trained to fit helmets for children in need.
